To be worthy of the name, a freethinker must be free of two things, the force of tradition and the tyranny of his own passions. No one is completly free from either. What makes a great thinker is not his beliefs but the way in which he holds them. If he holds them because his elders told him they were true when he was young, or if he holds them because if he did not he would be unhappy, his thought is not free; but if he holds them because, after careful thought, he finds a balance of evidence in their favor, then his thought is free, however odd his conclusions may seem. Freedom from the tyranny of passion is as essential as freedom from the influence of tradition. The jealous husband who suspect his wife of indifelity on inadequate grounds, and the complacent optimist, who refuses to suspect her when the evidence is overwhelming, are alike permitting passion to enslave their thought; in neither of them is thought free. | ±× À̸§¿¡ °É¸Â°Ô ÀÚÀ¯·Ó°Ô »ý°¢ÇÏ´Â »ç¶÷ÀÌ µÇ±â À§Çؼ´Â, µÎ °¡Áö·ÎºÎÅÍ ÀÚÀ¯·Î¿öÁ®¾ß Çϴµ¥, ÀüÅëÀ¸·ÎºÎÅÍÀÇ ±¸¼Ó°ú ÀÚ±â ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ °¨Á¤ÀÌ ±×°ÍÀÌ´Ù. ´©±¸µµ À̵é·ÎºÎÅÍ ¿ÏÀüÈ÷ ÀÚÀ¯·Î¿ï ¼ö´Â ¾ø´Ù. ±×·¯³ª ´©±º°¡¸¦ ÈǸ¢ÇÑ »ç»ó°¡·Î ¸¸µé¾î ÁÖ´Â °ÍÀº ±×°¡ °¡Áø ¹ÏÀ½ÀÌ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó, ±×°¡ ±× ¹ÏÀ½¿¡ µµ´ÞÇÏ°Ô µÈ °úÁ¤ÀÌ´Ù. ¸¸¾à ±× ¹ÏÀ½ÀÌ, ÀÚ½ÅÀÌ ¾î¸± Àû¿¡ Àڱ⺸´Ù ³ªÀÌ ¸¹Àº »ç¶÷ÀÌ ¿Ç´Ù°í ÇßÀ¸¹Ç·Î ÁöÁöÇϵ簡, ±× ¹ÏÀ½À» ¹ö¸± °æ¿ì ÀÚ½ÅÀÌ ºÒÆíÇØÁö±â ¶§¹®¿¡ °®´Â °ÍÀ̶ó¸é, ±×ÀÇ »ý°¢Àº ÀÚÀ¯·Ó´Ù°í ÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù. ±×·¯³ª, ±× ¹ÏÀ½ÀÌ ÁÖÀÇ ±íÀº »ç»öÀ» °ÅÃÄ, ±ÕÇüÀÖ´Â ±Ù°Å¸¦ ã¾Æ³»¾î ¾ò¾îÁø °ÍÀ̶ó¸é, ±× °á·ÐÀÌ ¾Æ¹«¸® ÀÌ»óÇÏ°Ô º¸ÀÏÁö¶óµµ, ±×ÀÇ »ý°¢Àº ÀÚÀ¯·Î¿î °ÍÀÌ´Ù. °¨Á¤ÀÇ ±¸¼ÓÀ¸·ÎºÎÅÍ ÀÚÀ¯·Î¿î °Íµµ ÀüÅëÀÇ ¿µÇâ¿¡¼ ¹þ¾î³ª´Â °Í¸¸ÅÀ̳ª Áß¿äÇÑ °ÍÀÌ´Ù. ºÎÀÎÀÇ °£ÅëÀ» ±Ù°Å ¾øÀÌ ÀǽÉÇÏ´Â ÁúÅõ½É ¸¹Àº ³²ÆíÀ̳ª, ±Ù°Å°¡ ÃæºÐÇѵ¥µµ ÀǽÉÇϱ⸦ °ÅºÎÇÏ´Â Àڱ⸸Á·¿¡ Âù ³«°üÁÖÀÇÀÚµµ ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ »ý°¢À» °¨Á¤ÀÇ ³ë¿¹·Î ¸¸µç´Ù´Â Á¡¿¡¼´Â ¶È°°´Ù. ¾î´À °æ¿ì³ª ÀÚÀ¯·Ó°Ô »ý°¢ÇÑ´Ù°í ÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù. |
