전쟁중이므로, 내가 가진 탄약을 여러 사람과 공유하는 일이 필요할 것 같다. 틈나는 대로 탄약공급을 했으면 좋겠다만, 여유가 좀 부족하다.
어쨌든, 첫번째이므로, 자유롭게 생각하는 사람은 어떠해야 하는 지에 대해서 러셀의 견해를 빌려본다.
Bertrand Russell on God and Religion 에 나온 구절이다. (읽은 책은 아님. 어디서 요부분만 읽었음. 오해말기를)

To be worthy of the name, a freethinker must be free of two things, the force of tradition and the tyranny of his own passions. No one is completly free from either. What makes a great thinker is not his beliefs but the way in which he holds them. If he holds them because his elders told him they were true when he was young, or if he holds them because if he did not he would be unhappy, his thought is not free; but if he holds them because, after careful thought, he finds a balance of evidence in their favor, then his thought is free, however odd his conclusions may seem. Freedom from the tyranny of passion is as essential as freedom from the influence of tradition. The jealous husband who suspect his wife of indifelity on inadequate grounds, and the complacent optimist, who refuses to suspect her when the evidence is overwhelming, are alike permitting passion to enslave their thought; in neither of them is thought free.

그 이름에 걸맞게 자유롭게 생각하는 사람이 되기 위해서는, 두 가지로부터 자유로워져야 하는데, 전통으로부터의 구속과 자기 자신의 감정이 그것이다. 누구도 이들로부터 완전히 자유로울 수는 없다. 그러나 누군가를 훌륭한 사상가로 만들어 주는 것은 그가 가진 믿음이 아니라, 그가 그 믿음에 도달하게 된 과정이다. 만약 그 믿음이, 자신이 어릴 적에 자기보다 나이 많은 사람이 옳다고 했으므로 지지하든가, 그 믿음을 버릴 경우 자신이 불편해지기 때문에 갖는 것이라면, 그의 생각은 자유롭다고 할 수 없다. 그러나, 그 믿음이 주의 깊은 사색을 거쳐, 균형있는 근거를 찾아내어 얻어진 것이라면, 그 결론이 아무리 이상하게 보일지라도, 그의 생각은 자유로운 것이다. 감정의 구속으로부터 자유로운 것도 전통의 영향에서 벗어나는 것만큼이나 중요한 것이다. 부인의 간통을 근거 없이 의심하는 질투심 많은 남편이나, 근거가 충분한데도 의심하기를 거부하는 자기만족에 찬 낙관주의자도 자신의 생각을 감정의 노예로 만든다는 점에서는 똑같다. 어느 경우나 자유롭게 생각한다고 할 수 없다.

이런 글은 외워두고, 끊임없이 적용해보면 쓸모가 있을 것이다.
